The Berlin Conference was a watershed moment in the Scramble for Africa, a period of intense competition among European colonial powers for the colonization of the continent. The Conference was convened to resolve overlapping colonial claims in the Congo region between the International Association of the Congo (AIC), France, and Portugal. The AIC emerged as the clear winner of the negotiations, but Portuguese intervention allowed for colonial gains in the Lower Congo.
